It doesnt work on free-nets?  It does in LA on the LA-FreeNet.  I
am living proof.  Athough it is kinda tricky for me because I 
cant really "see" the link on a monochrome IIe so I use the = key
a lot.  When I download, I download directly to my puter using
z-modem.  I dont go by way of the freenet, loading to the freenet
first and then to the puter.  There is a quirk on our system that
sends the link info as the file name.  Other than that every else
is fine.
