Greetings all. I have recently become re-enamored with my old Apple //
machines, and acquired a few bits and pieces that I wish I had had 10 years
ago when they were my primary computer. Lack of familiarity with some of my
new stuff leads me to ask a few questions. Any help I can get is much
appreciated. (e-mail or post replies, either way - I read this group every
day!)
1> I now have a //c with a Zip-Chip (yeah!), but not everything in the
Apple // world needs acceleration. I seem to remember hearing that a
key-sequence at power-up would go back to normal 1MHz operation. Is this
true? If true, what is said key?
2> I also now have a 512K RamWorks (the original, not the II or ///) and a
384K CheckMate MultiRam. Does ANYONE have the patch software to allow
Appleworks 2.x or 3.x to recognize this memory? Can I get (take, buy,
steal, beg, borrow) a copy from someone?
3> The //c with ZipChip runs the Apple II Desktop (gui8bit.shk) just
great. However, it appears to have two significant bugs. If I try to
delete files (from the menu OR dragging to the trash) with it, it counts up
the number of files to delete, and when you click "ok", it just locks up.
Also, when you select "File..Quit" from inside the actual desktop, instead
of going back to the selector or to the "normal" ProDOS quit code, it
crashes into the monitor. Looking at $1000 shows that the quit code being
copied there is totally bogus. There's valid code further down, but it
seems to be offset in memory by 30-40 bytes and starts at about $1028 or so.
I have downloaded gui8bit.shk twice, and it unshrinks fine, so I don't
believe the transfer is to blame. Anyone else have these problems? Does
anyone have a version that DOESN'T do this that they could e-mail me?
4> Does anyone have dox, schematics, pinouts, cables, ANYTHING for an
Apple Parallel Interface (made by Apple themselves) or a MicroTek SlotWare
serial card? I would like to use these cards in my e, but I seem to have
misplaced the instructions and need cables and switch settings. Apple
themselves denies EVER making a parallel anything for any of their computers
and refuses to do any kind of research, and MicroTek seems to be long since
gone (I had their address & phone # from another MicroTek product manual,
but they're no good). Photocopies or typed-up instructions would be more
than adequate here.
Well, that's all of them I can think of for now. I'm sure I'll come up
with others, and again, any help I can get in answering these is very much
appreciated. I may even be able to answer some other people's questions in
return! Hope to hear back from those other Apple // fanatics soon!
