What SCSI card do you have? Perhaps if you have the Rev. C Apple SCSI card
you will need to provide termination power to the SCSI bus. This would
explain why it works when part of a multi-device SCSI chain. --- One of the
other devices may have been providing the termination power for the bus.

Just a thought! 

BTW, I have a RamFAST card and use a 2.5 SCSI hard drive with my IIgs.
Works great. I have my drive internally mounted on a "SCSI Expander"
card (aka Roadrunner I believe.)
