   Define 'glide surfaces like found on modern mice' please. A mouse
is something you move around with your hand-- my PC has a very nice
modern mouse on it, and it has a ball in the bottom just like other
real mice. Plenty of computers are still being sold with mechanical or
optical mice; only certain notebooks have taken up the fad of
touchpads. Just because there are a few touchpads (the correct term
for them) nowadays that can act like mice doesn't mean that all mice
must look and act like them.

   Pretty much all Apple Mice (and especially those designed and sold
with Apple IIs) are the mechanical type-- a roller ball on the bottom.
If it's missing the ball, you'll have to find a replacement. The model
with the 9-pin connector is for use on the Mac, Mac Plus, Apple //c,
//c+, and //e with Apple Mouse controller card. 

   Despite having the same number of pins, the GS joystick port is not
designed for that mouse, and the mouse won't work as a joystick when
connected to it. Only the //c and //c+ pulled off the trick of being
able to use joysticks and mouse thru the same port.
