How do ya play Apple Panic?

I've had this game for a couple years, and all I can do is:
Go left
Go right
Go up ladders
Go down ladders
Get defeated by those creatures
Watch time run out
Hear that annoying starting sound (after hearing it as much as I have,
	you get a little sick of it)

Is there some attack key or strategy I'm missing?
