The drivers should be in the operating system (GS/OS), but not in the
firmware, so you can only access 800K and 400K disks in ProDOS-8, but it
should be possible to access 720K and 1.44MB disks under GS/OS.
(I am assuming that the most recent GS/OS AppleDisk3.5 driver supports any
ROM 4 disk controller hardware extensions that would be needed to handle a
high density drive. If not, the fact that it is a SuperDrive is a moot
point.)

It was still only a prototype - the SCSI hardware was implemented by
embedding the High-Speed SCSI card onto the motherboard, complete with its
own ROM. I expect that this would have been tidied up if the machine had
made it into production (along with other improvements, such as firmware
support for HD 3.5" disks).
