You don't "need" it, necessarily.
The main reason to use the RAM5 driver is because it is significantly
faster than the driver which GS/OS automatically generates (which makes
use of the SmartPort firmware).
Another benefit is that it lets you use the RAM5 disk even if you have
Slot 5 set to "Your Card".
