At the bare minimum, you need a serial card and cable. It's been a while
since anyone that I know of made an internal Apple ][ modem, therefore I
presume you want an external modem since that will let you run at 19.2Kbaud.
The most common serial card for the ][e is the Apple Super Serial Card, or
some equivalent third-party product with similar firmware. The card can
be configured to drive either a printer or a modem.
Next, you're gonna need software. There are a couple of 8-bit comm
programs available on the 'Net (assuming that you can get them onto 5.25"
A][ disks somehow); I used Kermit-65 for ages on my ][e. The general
consensus seems to be that ProTERM is the best 8-bit comm package for the
Apple ][; that is a commercial package and I am sure someone here will
tell you where to get a copy.
That's pretty much it. Unless, of course, you don't have at least one
disk drive hooked to your controller, in which case you'll need one to
load the software with. 8-)
