     One beneficial effect of this discussion may be that Asimov's
managers will understand that their contribution has been noted and seek
to improve standards.

     Tsk, tsk ... you should have subscribed to Computist!

     Quite a few old Apple II products incorporate protection which is
practically guaranteed to produce diskette failure to say nothing of extra
drive wear.
