PPP and Apple Mac

Apologies in advance if this message is in the wrong group but I don't
know enough about Apples to know if it is the correct newsgroup.
Please point me elsewhere if another group is more relevant.

However, that said.........

A friend of mine has a new Apple Mac Performa and a US Robotics 28.8
(old style) which he is using to try to access our local ISP.

Both he and I have spent ages trying to get it to work but keep
getting the error message "PPP Modem connect failure" which comes up
within about 5 seconds of getting a connection.  The modem seems to be
communicating OK but we can't get rid of the PPP failure message.

The ISP has tried to rectify the problem but don't know what to do
next.

Is it the Mac config, dodgy software or a faulty modem???.

Anyone?
