Wow. I've done a bunch more testing, and I think that what looked
like two different bugs were killed with one patch. I'm not totally
sure on it (could only reproduce it about 50% of the time, so even
after about 8-10 tries to reproduce it, there's still a chance it's
been real lucky). The various bugs were:
A: (Harder to reproduce and prove its source). Icon list would get
blasted with lots of icons installed. Symptoms: small icons for
certain files would be drawn with the large generic 'document' icon,
information in 'Get Info' windows could be full of garbage
B: (Isolated and killed by GUPP 1.02). Finder would stomp over
memory randomly. [Something being passed in lied about the size of
an array... I prevent it from walking off the end of a handle.]
Symptoms: finder would crash on startup, while looking at various
disks, opening windows, etc.
A may be a more subtle version of B... instead of crashing, the
Finder would only display garbage later.
Anyhow, I haven't been able to reproduce either in the times
since installing GUPP 1.02. [I did notice its preventing the Finder
from walking off handles did slow down loading a little with lots
of icons. I've got some ideas that should be able to make that
almost unnoticeable... 1.03 might be out in the next few days]
Anyone who reported Finder crashiness to me when I called for bug
reports last week should definitely give 1.02 a try.
