Re: GS Icon file Verifier released

And here are the TACKY - TASTELESS - DICTITORIAL DOX for everybody to
read. Nathan I was WRONG! You're still the same ignorant, pompous,
narrow-minded, self-centered, self-appointed Apple King wanna-be -
BUTTHEAD - you've always been. And, I guess that's all you ever will be
until you chock on your own bullshit! Or open your mind and see the
LIGHT. You want an all-out war piss-ant? Well you got it!

Read em folks and GAG!

Vfyicon 1.0 by Nathan Mates

This is a freeware GS shell program to verify that icon files'
contents are valid to fit the specifications set forth for their
internal structure. With all of the reports of "bad icon files"
causing Finder 6.0.1 crashes, I decided to write a program to make
sure that the files are valid.

How to install/use:
This is a shell program, requiring the GNO/ME shell or the
Orca/M (and maybe some other third party ones) to run. Please
follow the following directions for installing it:

GNO/ME: Copy to a directory of system binaries, such as /usr/local/bin,
log out, and log back in to add it to your path.

Orca Shell: Copy to the directory 17:, and add it to 15/syscmnd,
as detailed in the manual. Exit and restart the Orca Shell to
install.

Once installed, you can do the following from the command prompt:

vfyicon fubar.icons [somemore.icons ...]

Under the GNO/ME shell, you can do 'vfyicons *' to parse multiple
files without listing them explicitly on the command line. There is
one documented command line option: '-v'. If used, it must be the
first command line option, e.g.

vfyicon -v fubar.icons [somemore.icons ...]

This turns on verbose mode, in which the sizes, types, and associated
path of each icon in the file are listed.

Technical details & known bugs
My first 100% C program for the GS. It's a real hack, but it
mostly works. Known bugs: it doesn't check filetypes, so if you tell
it to scan 'ftype.apple' in */system.icons, it'll report it as a bad
icon file. [If it was an icon file, it'd be bad. But, it's not]
This program is also running thanks to the many and major bugfixes
in Orca/C 2.1; when first written, the Orca/C 2.0.3 installed crashed
due to no fault of my coding.

This program contains material from the Orca/C
   Run-Time Libraries, copyright 1987-1992
by Byte Works, Inc. Used with permission

Legal Stuff:
This program is freeware. You may pass it around as you like, as
long as the patcher file is bundled with this documentation. The only
restriction is that you may not charge for distributing this, except
for the costs of material (disk), and shipping/handling. Permission is
granted for groups such as, but not limited to, Big Red, Shareware
Solutions II, and other "Disk of the month" clubs to distribute it, so
long as no more than $5 per disk is charged. Permission is also
granted to upload this patcher and the documentation as a bundle to
online groups.

However, due to the behavior of a Mr. Charles Turley, this program
may not be archived or referenced on any 1WSW or affiliated site. If
and when Dr. Wrong learns to properly behave, this condition may be
changed at my discretion.

GNO is a registered trademark of Procyon, Inc. The coolest
thing running for the GS. By all means, buy it!

Orca is a trademark of the ByteWorks. Useful. Buy it if you want
to program the IIGS in assembly, C, or Pascal.

My Address, etc.:
If you really want to get in contact with me, please use email.
nathan@ugcs.caltech.edu should be valid through at least December
1996, by which time I certainly hope to release an update to GUPP
which patches more things.

If you want to support a IIGS author, check out my other programs,
such as GameHacker, a set of game NDAs (MineHunt, Power Grid,
MultiTris), and my published programs on SoftDisk G-S #45, #47 (and
one other; I forget), and my modules for the Awesome IIGS screen
saver, Twilight II.

As a shameless plug, here's an advert for Twilight II 1.2, due to
be released in a few months. I have lots of new modules for T2 1.2,
such as Toast, Fish, Globe, Flames, Snowflakes, Spirals, Swirls, and
updates to my earlier modules Clocks, LED Message, MiniFireworks,
Modern Art, Perspective, Sharks and Fish, and Tunnelgame. I'm planning
a few more cool new modules, too. Twilight II 1.2 will have even less
interrupt overhead, auto switching of modules in random mode after
some time, and more!

Apple II Forever!!!

And I might add for the glory of SATAN MATES, I didn't even sector edit
these CHEESIE DOX.

Bite me Nathan, you TWERP!

Cheers,
Tom
