I can shed some light on the problem. This thread really needs to be in
the comp.sys.mac.* hierarchy. I'd post the original over there, but my
newsfeed doesn't seem to have it anymore. (Strange, since it IS fairly
recent--or maybe I've seen the replies, but not the original)

Anyways, the "Control Strip" is a CDEV that Apple supplies with their
Powerbook computers. It allows a person to monitor the amount of battery
power, turn video monitoring (for an external monitor) on/off, and a lot
of other functions that are useful only on Powerbooks.
