There are three possibilities which I can think of:
1) The Macintosh is adding a resource fork to your archive,
thus foiling attempts to read it.
2) The Macintosh is adding a header to your file (usually
256 bytes) which prevents the program from understanding
the archive format.
3) Uhh, I just forgot, so you'll have to read the followups
to this message.
