First, it would be a good idea to examine the conditions imposed by
the $31,000 Tech grant. As a rule, grants are designed to force recipiants
to Buy New Stuff. The kind of creative, efficient, money-saving approach
you are pursuing is definitly anti-grant behavior.

If the grant language is no barrier, then you have at least one
strong argument: _You_ are the teacher of your class and it is your
judgement that using the 8 Apple IIe systems is the way to go for your
students. Other points in your favor include ...

1- With 8 machines more students will have access to an in-room computer

2- The IIe is ideal for learning to program in BASIC and Logo

3- For more advanced students, the IIe is ideal for learning to program
in Assembly

4- You have access to PILES of IIe software

5- You will be able to guarantee that your Apple II's will be
well-maintained

6- Your students will have an advantage in learning about computer
hardware

 7- Diversity is beautiful!

Besides, if necessary, you do not mind spending some of your money
for a basic PC system.

As for "one upping" the PC and PMac users, why bother?!
