re: Finder 6.0.1

GTH| So you are saying that if you move a program, you want to wait
| five minutes for the Finder to find a program on all mounted
No... The intent was, there are times (In The Beginning) that when
trying to open a text/Teach-doc the Finder doesn't know where to find
Teach. Some sort of assignment would be nice for universality.
GTH| Also, I wouldn't want Teach in the System folder since it isn't
| an integrated portion of the Operating System.
True; you would then think there'd be a */system/Utils folder? :)
| called "Apple Extras" and put Teach there. Backup and Bowl would
| be appropriate items there as well.
Backup would go in the Utils folder, Bowl is a game.
GTH| You do have full control over this. Just put disk drive drivers
| in the order you want them on the desktop (where boot volume is
Not complete. You can't have the computer put the Trash icon in the
lower left corner (or anywhere other than the lower right) without some
available-out-there program which does it. Upon reading your suggestion
I tried it, and I thank you because things are more the way I want them.
GTH| I think I am confused with this. You want IconEd, the shareware
| icon editor, to be distributed with the Apple System Software?
Yes. :) Or some other icon editor. Why didn't Apple include one?
>-> The Control Panel CDEV has an Icons department: used to set

GTH| I made this comment before...this is only useful if GS/OS is
| multitasking. That kind of control panel would only effect the
| Finder and not any other program running.
Multitasking or not, some control over icon placement/spacement would be
rather nice. Even Windows 3.1 had a control panel setting for it
(though the freeware MoreControl came out to tweak things the control
panel *should* have covered since they are also in the .ini's).
| Modular programs such as Quicklauch were made for modular
| extensions to the Finder for "those who need or want that
| capability." I like Quicklaunch and obviously you do to. This
| isn't highly useful for those without a hard drive.
Ergo it should be an Install option (okay, I rephrase my original
statement: "QuickLaunch should come with the system package" instead of
my implying it should be coded into the Finder). Glad we both like it!
GTH| OK, time and energy can be spent adding this. We have enough RAM
| and hard disk space to waste with another sound. I could find a
| use for this.
As said earlier, there are wares out there which expand the sounds
attached to actions, so why not expand the list that the Sound CDEV can
fiddle with? Users don't have to use Sound or add sounds to every
action -- I personally hate the "whoosh" of a window explosion or
implosion so those aren't defined, and while I have the Eject Disk sound
defined (Leslie Neilson asking if I really meant it or if "you're just
saying that because we exchanged bodily fluids") the Disk Inserted sound
gets repeated when closing an app and returning to Finder so I don't
have that one defined either. I do however want a different sound for
restarting than for shutting down.
GTH| This has already been written in shareware form.
And I have one. But why doesn't System 6.0.1 come with one??
GTH| Not to criticize you at all, but you have to realize that Apple
| will not further enhance nor fix bugs in GS/OS. If a third party
| wants to do this (i.e. Brutal Deluxe), they probably won't want to
| rewrite portions of the Finder to include functionality that can
I know who is *not* in on the project, yes. :) Don't be so sure that a
third party who cares about the GS would *not* want to make the Finder
more useful or broad. I agree that the Finder as it is is readily
expandable. There are just a few add-ons a lot of people have put on
their computers (such as QuickLaunch or a menu clock) which would be
nice to see included with the System instead of having to hunt it down.
Some things could be coded in, some things could just be included in a
System Extras disk which comes with the System for convenience.
The local user group here, when someone needs a System 6.0.1 setup,
hands over *eight* disks with similar labels. You can see that at least
two of these didn't come with whatever Apple produced...
GTH| Yes, I see the point that it is nice to have all these useful
| "option" included with System Software distribution. As what
| someone suggested before, set up a Web site which includes all
We agree. And since not everyone has Web access...
| make sure that shareware authors are compensated for their
Of course!
So... any takers on 6.0.2's development? :) << mush >>
