Gettin IIGS

I am getting my IIGS back in a week or to, and, I am wondering what is 
the first thing I should do to it? I'm definitely going to paint the case 
black. What system software and other stuff should I use? It's your basic 
ROM 01 system, so I can't do all that much (I guess). Got 1.25 mb of ram, 
3.5", 5.25", other standard stuff. Any cheap hardware that I could get to 
make the system usable? I hope the 3.5" drive still works, dagnabbit. If 
it doesn't, then I'll need help repairing it.
