ProDOS-8 is limited to 14 local volumes (13 onces you exclude /RAM).

Once you exclude two volumes for each disk controller (3.5" and 5.25",
assuming they are both enabled), you are down to 9 volumes, which
would normally come from the first nine partitions on a SCSI hard
drive. If you have two 3.5" drives as well as /RAM5, you will only be
able to access eight partitions.

There is probably a limit on the number of network volumes which can
be accessed, but they are handled separately (I suspect you can't have
more than 16 volumes in total, or the ONLINE call will not be able to
list them all).

Support for networked volumes under ProDOS-8 is somewhat haphazard, as
it depends on whether the application in question tries to use
features which are not compatible with the networks, such as
BLOCK_READ and BLOCK_WRITE calls, or requiring the use of slot/drive
or unit numbers. Network volumes can only be accessed at the file
level, and must be referred to by name.

Of course - AppleWorks doesn't do anything special: it just uses the
normal ProDOS-8 calls, which are able to access any mounted network
volumes as long as you booted via GS/OS with AppleShare support installed.
