     You're off about a year; and, there were two interesting new machines
in the running. Amiga and Atari ST arrived in 1985. Both featured very
good Sound plus Graphics which (years later) would be called "VGA" on PC.

     Neither machine was very successful in winning II user support. Even
in the context of the mid-80's, Amiga and ST failed to satisfy the
'concept' definition of "Apple II". Both were, essentially, Mac-style
closed boxes.
