I have a 20 meg Vulcan. I network my IIgs to my Mac SE and use it's hard drive. 
But back to the Vulcan, I had problems with mine when I forgot to keep the 
Vulcan disk driver in the system folder when I upgraded to 6.0.1 awhile back. 
Did you get the drivers disk with it? When I stuck the driver in there all my 
problems, same symptoms as you describe, went away.
