AppleIIGS with AppleTalk to PC
Here's one for ya........
I have an AppleIIGS with built in AppleTalk networking capabilities. I
need to hook it up to a PC acting as an AppleTalk file server.
My progress.....
Read apple2 and appletalk FAQS.
Lycos and Yahoo searches.
www.shareware.com searches.
Questions are...
1. Other than MacLan what software is there on the PC for
Windows 95 or DOS? Shareware, freeware, public domain included.
2. What hardware will I need on the PC (ibm clone, not mac)?
I have done research and found COOPS make rather expensive
appletalk networking cards for the PC. With smart software you
should just be able to use a serial port, right?
3. What kind of data transfer rate can I expect on an unaccelerated
Apple IIGS? The IIGS uses one of it's serial ports for appletalk,
which have a max. speed of 19.2kbs according to the control pannel.
Some good code comm programs have got that up to 56.7kbs or more.
Well, yes this is apple after all but...
5. What is the cable length of a shielded appletalk network?
6. I have a LaserJet4m connect to the IIGS through appletalk.
With the Laserjet driver it takes a lot longer after the first
printing is done. I have to reboot the printer to print another
series of pages. This is with Appleworks GS, with Teach the printer
won't print at all after the first run. Cable length around 30ft.,
and baud rate set to 9600 (turns out to be the fastest). I am
running GSOS 6.01. I have tried all system inits, clean system
and unclean. I am stumped, seams to be some timeout problem.
Now this may be in the appletalk FAQ. I skimmed through and older
one.
7. Where can you get the latest AppleTalk FAQ?
Yes, this is a helpme post. Thanks a lot for your help or just reading
this far!
