The Manager 1.5 Feature List

Hi folks,

ok, since there seems to be a lot of interest in The Manager v1.5,
I have translated its "What's New" text into English to let you know
of all of its new features.

You may give Seven Hills Software a call and ask why they never released
this version in the USA/Canada. If enough people keep inquiring about
v1.5, perhaps Seven Hills might change their attitude and call the
original authors to get the permission for an English 1996 release.

IMHO, it's a shame that v1.5 was never made public to a wider audience,
since most IIGS users are to be found in the USA.

The Manager 1.5 Overview
""""""""""""""""""""""""

Many things have changed in The Manager since version 1.0. Numerous
bugs have been fixed, and The Manager now offers new features which
dramatically enhance the stability of the multi-application environment.

 o Support for System 6.0.1.

o The Manager 1.5 works properly together with Kangaroo 1.5 and
   TransProg III 1.5.

o Internal modifications to improve compatibility with many
applications, and to protect The Manager much better against some
   "bad" applications.

o In the 'Configure Application' dialog, new options have been added to
allow The Manager to work with a larger number of applications.

   These are as follows:

o "Don't use Shadowing" - This option is for applications like
Desktop Disasm or AppleWorks GS that don't support QuickDraw's
Shadowing feature correctly. Version 1.0 of The Manager did not
support Shadowing. However, in the new version Shadowing is used
for faster screen update operations, and this is the reason why
this option has been added. The use of Shadowing now allows
applications like DreamGrafix to be run under The Manager,
      something that wasn't possible before.

o "Short-circuit Interrupt Manager". This option has been added for
applications that use routines depending on machine-cycles. For
example, a communication application like Spectrum needs the
maximum number of machine-cycles for its modem routines. This
option short-circuits the 'The Manager' routine that's installed
      in the Interrput Manager.

ATTENTION: Do not systematically select this option for all your
applications in hope to accelerate your GS. (...)

o In the Finder's 'Extra' menu, there's now an entry called "TM
Worksets...". This is a new feature of The Manager, and it enabels
you to create what is called a Workset, a group of applications. For
example, you can create a Workset containing Teach and GraphicWriter.
Once created, double-clicking on it will launch both Teach and
GraphicWriter automatically. This way you can launch applications you
frequently use at the same time just by double-clicking on a file. To
edit a Workset that has already been created, you just select its
icon and open the Finder's 'Extra' menu. The entry "TM Worksets..."
has been changed to "TM Edit Workset...". This way you can modify the
   Worksets you want.

o The menu entries "Preferences..." and "Memory Info..." have been
moved to 'The Manager' menu, so these options are available all
the time. Previously, they were only accessable from the Finder's
   'Extra' menu.

o In the "Preferences" window, a new option has been added that
allows an application or Workset to be launched if The Manager
is started up for the first time. This option is quite useful if
you are using the same application or same group of applications
   very often.

o New features have been added to allow applications like TransPorg III
to work even better with The Manager and to provide total
   compatibility.

o The Manager has always required the Hierarchic Init to work. With
version 1.0, The Manager could not be launched without Hierarchic
being installed. With the new version, The Manager automatically
detects if Hierarchic has not been installed, and lets the user
load the init "on the fly".

(Note: This is the same option available with Spectrum v2.0)

o A couple of small things have been added to provide more comfort:

o For example, if you are in Teach and you want to switch to the
Finder, all current Teach windows will be closed until you switch
back to Teach (only if you've checked the appropriate option).

This option is similar to System 7.0 for the Macintosh.

o If an application is considered to be "cached" by The Manager, its
icon is dimmed immediately in 'The Manager' menu and the name of
the application is displayed in italic. This gives you a detailed
view of the state of all applications.

 o And and lot more...
