Yes, a "SCSI adapter" or a IIgs compatible SCSI interface card is
required to use SCSI devices on a IIgs. As to what devices are
supported, this depends on which SCSI interface card is used.
The two most popular SCSI cards for the IIgs are the RamFAST and the
Apple Hi Speed. In general, the cards support:
+ most SCSI-1 and SCSI-2 hard drives (RF has trouble with
Quantum Fireball harddrives)
+ several removable media drives
- IOmega Zip
- SyQuest EZ135 and its 5.25" (44, 88, 200) and 3.5" (105,
270) predecessors
- many tape drives
+ most cd-rom drives
The RF is the preferred card of most c.s.a2er's because it is faster,
still being supported, and works with more cd-rom and tape drives
right out of the box (the AHS requires commercial software drivers
for most cd-rom drives other than the Apple CD-150 (and maybe
CD-300)).
The RF costs about $130 and is available from Sequential Systems
(800-759-4549) and Scranton/Quality Computers (800-890-8263).
