i can't answer for sure but i think the variable border colour has
to do with which i/o space registers the ss card watches. the border
colour is the lower nibble of $c034, with the upper nibble used by
the clock. now, i think i heard/saw somewhere that this is why the ss
card doesn't/can't watch the border colour. if you go to the control panel
and change the border colour, you'll see that the ss card does NOT
track the changes. i've never seen a relationship between colour and
crash likelyhood. it would have made sense to me to have had the 
ss firmware always choose a black border, but hey, what do i know?
