I just read this important part of your posting:

keys Z-X-K-Space

I am running AppleWin on Windows on VirtualBox on Mac OS X.  And, it
works except when using the Apple II+ emulation in AppleWin because
the game is expecting lower case keys:  z-x-k.  The original Apple II
and Apple II+ didn't have lower case keyboards!  Otherwise, the game
works with Apple //e emulation works under AppleWin.  I had to slow
the emulator down to play.  Is that cheating?!?
