Breaking up large text files?

What easy, fast way is there to neatly split large text file (over 800K)?

They wont load into Appleworks 3.0.  GS/OS word processors are slow 
because you have to highlight 400k to get it on the clipboard.  It takes 
ten minutes to highlight 100k.  Some wont cut that much after you get it 
highlighted, in which case you have to delete, save with new name, load 
original and highligt the other half.

There must be something obvious i am missing (which would not be unusual.)
