Excellent post Helen, except for this one part...
>Make sure you have a 14,400 modem. Scantron (Q) makea a very good one
Definitely get a 14.4kbps or better modem, but stay away from Scantron
Quality Computers unless you enjoy getting ripped off. They generally
charge 2 to 3 times the going rate for modems and hard drives, especially
when they're selling it as an Apple II peripheral. The modems that
Scantron Quality sells are just plain old PC modems with a Quality
computer label stuck on them.
My best advice for the Apple II user new to modems and online communications
is to buy ProTerm and a modem cable directly from InTrec software at
602-992-5515 and just go to your local computer superstore and buy an
*external* modem targeted at the Mac or PC. In fact, if you buy a modem
packaged for Mac, often the package will include a modem cable that will
work on an Apple IIgs (although I have heard that the InTrec cable is better).
Lastly, unless you have an accelerated IIgs, don't let a salesman talk
you into a 28,800 modem. Most Apple II's can't talk that fast without
a special serial card (like the Turbo ASB (sp?)). A 28,800 modem will
work just fine, but you'll pay more than you have to.
