Re: How many apple ///s?
Hi..
As far as I have been able to figure, Apple made approx. 100,000 Apple ///s.
They were making money on them when they discontinued the ///+ units in 1983.
The ///s really have little monetary value but they have a lot of value
for those of us who enjoy computers as a hobby - and especially an Apple. You
might be interested to know that when I bought my ///+, the computer store
was selling a 256K A3+ with monitor, Apple IIe with monitor and duo disk drive,
a //c with monitor and printer, a lisa or a Mac (I would guess a 512K) for the
same price... your choice for just $1795.00 (this was in August, 1984). Frankly
my decision to buy the ///+ was right on target (or if I'd gotten the II or c)
since the /// (in my case) has given back so much more than what I put in. I
upgraded to 512K, a unidisk and (just!) a 20 mb hard drive. Consider that I
would have had to purchase a completely NEW mac system (perhaps more than once)
over the 1984-1996 period. The /// has a wonderful new OS (BOS3) written by
Bob Consorti. We just released a new SCSI Manager that allows the /// to use
almost all SCSI drives, including the Syquest EZ drive and hope to work on some
additional projects with Bob in the future. WAP (Washington Apple Pi) in
Rockville, Md. has the worlds largest collection of Apple /// PD disks -
closing in on 200 and we are the only club to my knowledge that still supports
the ///. I just published my 10th disk of articles written in our Journal about
the ///. AND I do have the Apple /// Technical Reference Manual - with
schmatics. I can copy it for around $50.00 if you're interested (I have a huge
collection of Apple /// material). FYI - our Internet FTP site is at the
West Virginia University - to subscribe, send a message to:
APPLE3-L@WVNVM.WVNET.EDU
Whew! Most of this is in an Apple /// FAQ that's available from many Apple II
sites around the US (and world, I believe) as well as on Compuserve.
