The Apple IIgs has better graphics than earlier Apple II models. An
exact description is a little complicated, (I'm sure you could understand
I just don't want to type it all) but there is a 320x200 mode and a 640x200
mode. The 320x200 mode allows 256 colors, but only 16 different colors
on a line. This is sufficient to display GIFs, although there is some
loss of quality especially with photographic images. Often times Apple IIgs
GIF viewers display the image in grayscale (or give you that option) since
16 gray shades looks better than 16 colors. There's also some tricks you
can play to get better images.
