Greg, the behavior you describe is perfectly normal for an *enhanced* //e.
An *UN*enhanced ][e (no MouseText; the old, slow 80-column firmware; says
"Apple ][" on boot instead of "Apple //e") will display the HI-res screen
during the test; the screen will slowly turn white, then black a couple of
times, then you SHOULD get "KERNEL OK" at the top of the screen. If the
test is activated using both Apple keys (instead of just the solid-Apple),
the test will be accompanied by an annoying high pitched squeal from the
speaker.
