  I am not too sure of what the problem is(I haven't even owned a laser 
computer) but maybe the second 3.5 drive is assigned to some slot,drive 
other than the one you are trying. On my IIgs my first 3.5 drive is 
slot,drive 5,1   while my second 3.5 drive is slot,drive 2,1. So if I 
have no ramdrive and I try to catalog s5,d2 then I get no device 
connected. Hope that helps....
