You can tell if your IIe is enhanced or not by doing the following:

   - With no disks in the drives, turn on your computer and look at the top
center of the monitor screen. If you see 'Apple ][' you have an unenhanced
unit; if you see 'Apple //e' you have an enhanced unit.

   - you can also tell by reading the part numbers on the four chips that
constitute the enhanced chip set. They are:

     -- monitor ROM (CD) 342-0304
     -- monitor ROM (EF) 342-0303
     -- 65C02 338-6503
-- character generator ROM (US) 342-0265

You can check on the health of your motherboard by running the internal
diagnostic. After you start the IIe, press and hold down the following four
keys: <open apple>, <solid apple>, <control>, and <reset>. Release <reset>,
then the other three.

After a bit of jiggling, you should see the words "Kermit OK" if your
machine is unenhanced or "System OK" if it is enhanced. If you see a row of
numbers, then there is illness within. The numbers are clues as to where that
is.

   Let us know what happens.
