I know that the MX80 is the earliest Epson model of those you mention.
I still have mine from 1980.
 
I have a vague recollection that the Orange Micrograppler is a device thta
lets Epsons emulate Imagewriters.  I use a different version to link my
/c to my MX80 and recall setting dipswitches to defeat the emulation.
 
I'm not sure why the basic dump works and the other task doesn't, but the
success with the serial card and imagewriter suggests that the software
expects that combination in reality or emulation.
