Apple IIGS - Music and Modem

Rank newbie here, please forgive my ignorance .. my passion far exceeds it.

A friend just gave me an Apple IIGS - ROM 3 with both size disk drives, 
Kensington System Saver, an Imagewriter II, the system disks, and a few other 
software titles.

I think I have a plan for using this machine intelligently without spending 
loads of money.  

I want to be able to hook up a midi keyboard to it and run music composition 
software - and I want to hook up a modem to be able to dial into my shell 
acount and ftp software from the net.

Where do I start?  What modem can I plug into this thing?.. what term software 
do you suggest.. what about the music end .. anyone doing this stuff with the 
IIGS?

All help appreciated.
