Why would I want to operate without an apple II?

Portability.  Put CB in a laptop case with keyboard, LCD, battery.
The apple II slot becomes the "docking station".  Program/type/etc on
the road, bring it home, plug it in to the IIe, transfer files between
flash card and Apple II storage devices, transfer files between flash
and a PC using Uthernet, etc.
