   This is a sign that the second joystick button (which doubles as
the option key) is thought to be pressed down. If there is a joystick
connected to the GS, disconnect it and see how things go. If not, try
unplugging the keyboard and see how things go. Basically, if you have
a problem, disconnect everything until it works, then add stuff back
in.  If the GS + monitor fails to boot, it's a motherboard problem.

   You mentioned random memory errors detected on a card; if you can
isolate this down to a bad chip or two, throw it out. New 4MB cards
are available for about $120, I think.
