Help! New GS user

Please help me..

I just received a IIGS for christmas from my girlfriends parents.  I need 
help doing many things, but mainly getting files off the web and onto my 
machine.  I don't have a modem, and have been saving files in the ProDos 
format.  How can I get my machine to read these files, and is it possible 
for my machine to read them at all?  I've read about shrinkit and 
binscii, but I don't quite understand.  Is there any way to help...If so, 
please respond
