I had the same problem and fixed it the same way.  However, in my case, it
was just plain, dumb luck.  I deleted the font.list in order to make a new
list because I added fonts that didnt show up.  Prior to adding fonts I got
the error which I believe happened because my HD partition got full up and
might have overwritten something.  I had other problems as well.  So I
dumped the partition to disks and erased the partition, reinstalled the
system via my backup disks (not the actual sys 6.0.1 set) and the problem
was still there.  When i deleted the font.list, bingo, I was back in
business.
