Another program you would want to add is an "Importer"
People who are buying computers for the first time have been preprogrammed
to ask several questions:
1) Does it run windows?
2) how much ram/how fast is it?
3) How much does it cost?
Your variation on John Dvorak's idea has the price question answered.
We'd probably have to show how fast a "super-gs" is at doing things,
But some people get stuck thinking Mhz = speed. Trying to explain that
its more like RPM in your car than MPH doesn't do any good. The mac
people have been trying that for a few years. Most clone users (the ones
that don't understand) keep repeating that scene from the movie 'Spinal Tap'
..." But I can turn my amp up to 11, it goes to 11 and the others only
go to 10"
So just optimize the hell out of the code , gets a faster bus speed,
and show people its fast.
What did I mean by an importer? Well, It won't run windows, but a program could
be written that could import files from other platforms.
You work with Excel at work. No problem.. bring home a disk with your files,
pop it in the 'super-gs' click on the importer and the file can be
worked on by Appleworks GS or Quick Click Calc or whatever. If the
Importer can export bring your finished files back to work!
Do it for all major text formats , spreadsheets, and databases, throw in
graphic transltion and you don't need windows.
Although there is another market that this could sell even better to.
Co If you design the operating system to easily attach to existing networks
you could make a killing populating the desks of the business world.
Think of the bonus some guy is going to get for saving his company
hundreds of thousands of dollars by buying $500.00 computers with a
$200.00 Ethernet Card/Software package for everyone below the lavel of V.P.
instead of a $1700.00 clone with windows 3.11 or NT. This guy's boss? well let's
say she'll be very happy presenting that to the board!
.....Hey isn't that how the whole personal computing revolution started?
Accountants spending there own money to buy Apple II's and visicalc
so they wouldn't be at the mercy of M.I.S. administrators?
Apple II to lead the revolt against Microsoft
only Network Administrators....
just a thought.
