I managed to do the very same for $90. The difficult part was
locating the controller card, which few people own or are willing to
part with. The SuperDrive is fairly common though, especially if you
search for an internal model (look among Mac users) and slide it into
an older 800K drive enclosure. Searching through Mac newsgroups I
was able to eventually find a mechanism at 1/3rd it's average cost.
The upgrade lacks the yellow r/w LED and "FDHD" printing on
front (note only some have this) but that's only a minor cosmetic
difference. Of course if someone out there has a spare yellow 3.5
drive LED or an 'FDHD' sticker for a Mac II/SE upgrade... :)
