I don't have a manual either; but, someone who does may be interested:
How are the switches set?
When you tried Appleworks, did you go through the Appleworks printer
setup? At the Control Panel, did you set the Slot for the Grappler to
"Your Card"?
A pretty good test for bare bones interface functioning is to boot a
ProDOS 8 diskette and go to the BASIC prompt. Do the usual PR#1 (or
whatever Slot # the card is in) and try LISTing the current program. If
the Control Panel is set correctly, you should get a printout.
If nothing happens and your Grappler is not in Slot 1, then try moving
it to Slot 1. (If three of the switches are to set Slot #, then, they are
probably set for Slot 1.) Make sure the Control Panel says "Your Card"
for Slot 1 and try the bare bones test again.
