Thanks all - its all these similar sounding key presses that's the problem (plus the ordering and timing of it all :-) Also got round the problem using someone else's suggestion - I changed the horizontal hold - apparently most composite monitors have enough lee-way to cope with 60Hz as well as 50Hz.
