According to Atlaz's catalog, they sell the IIe enhancement kit for $39, 
which is about as cheap as you're going to find it. Besides, it gets you 
a neat catalog. IIe Enhancement Kit AP-100E.

I have working SSC's for sale, they have no docs, but come preconfigured 
for a high speed modem. Just Plug into slot #2 and Play. 

Tell you what, for $35, I'll sell you the SSC, a modem cable, and starter 
software so that all you need to do is track down a working modem/enhance 
your IIe and you're in business. I'll even ship it to you as long as 
you're in CONUS. 

AllTech used to sell 14.4k modems for $49, and 9600 bps modems for $39. 
Maybe they've got some of the 9600's left. 9600 will fill up a 5.25" 
floppy in like 3 minutes, which is plenty fast for a IIe. Your files just 
aren't that big.

This really oughta be in the .comm newsgroup, which is where I'm 
directing the followups.
