As far as program crashes are concerned, I've run across a few
programs that crash if you have too many init's and/or da's running
when you launch them, so that's a possibility.  You might try booting
with the shift key held down to suppress the init/da loading, and see
if the programs still crash.  Worst case, you'll have ruled that out
as a cause.
