I'm not Tom, but I should be able to answer the question.

AppleWorks 4.x works on a machine with two 5.25" floppies, but I
wouldn't recommend using it. You have to do too many disk swaps, in
my opinion. It is fine on a machine with a 3.5" drive (or a hard
drive). Version 4 will run on a 128K machine, but you only have about
20K of desktop space available, and you can't use most of the add-on
options. I'd recommend at least 256K of RAM.
AppleWorks 5.x will not even run from 5.25" floppies. It can be
supplied on them, but only for the purposes of installing the program
on a hard drive. Version 5 requries at least 256K of RAM, and I'd
recommend more than that.
You are best off sticking to AppleWorks 3.0 or earlier if you only
have 5.25" drives. If you have 128K or less RAM, I'd also recommend
avoiding 3.0 unless you need its features and don't mind losing some
desktop space. 2.1 and earlier give you about 55K of desktop space in
128K RAM, but 3.0 only gives you 40K.
In addition, 3.0 requires more disk swapping than 2.1 and earlier (if
you are changing modules). I'd definitely recommend sticking to 2.1
or earlier if you only have a single 5.25" drive.
