I have not followed this closely, so I could be repeating something.
Could it be that what is happening is that 1.4 meg disks are getting
formatted on a Apple gs as 800K disks (a 800K drive would NOT sense the
extra hole). When the disk is put into a "superdrive" the extra hole
would be sensed and the mac would get confused (smart machine?).
One "fix" if this is the cause, would be to cover the "extra" hole.
