This is a known bug, and there have been fixes posted, but I don't have them.

This problem has to do with messed up Icon files, or invisible Desktop 
files. First try deleting the Desktop files. Some of your desktop icons 
will disappear, but they will be restored when you run those programs. If 
that doesn't do it, temporarily move any recently added icon files. If 
that doesn't do it, move them all to a holding folder and move them back 
one at a time.

The battery backed rom is not likely involved, so leave it alone.
