Most likely culprits are too high a record level (just turn down the gain 
on the recorder) or an overdriven amp on the SM. If there's a volume or 
output level control for it, turn it down.

I make many tapes from my GS/Audio Animator. They were good enough for 
broadcast. It can be done.
