Ah. That's an inherent problem with the 5.25" drive. The computer has no
way of knowing for certain how many 5.25" drives are connected. So if you
are in P8 or DOS 3.3 or Pascal, the software should assume two 5.25"
drives and give you the option of not using S6,D2. At least that's my
philosophy...I'm really annoyed by programs which assume only one drive
and require disk swaps on my two-drive system.
Under GS/OS, the use of a device driver handles the problem of the phantom
5.25. You tell GS/OS that you only have one drive (according to an
earlier post by changing the auxtype of the driver...), and GS/OS will not
recognize a second 5.25 drive, even if it does exist.
This is also why the APPLEDISK5.25A and APPLEDISK5.25B options will appear
in a Standard File Dialog drive listing, even if neither drive contains a
valid volume.
