I bought a 40MB HD from Shrevesport last year which started to act up after
about 5 months: The sped of the dirve started slow down/speed up and was erratic. That made it impossible to read/write reliably.
I had about given up on this piece, especially since Shreveport was not
cooperaqtive in helping.
A few week ago someone here suggested to someopne else that turning a HD
upside down may solve or had solved a similar HD problem.
Well, I tried it myself since I had nothing to lose. It did NOT solve my
problem. Then it occurred to me, why not turn the HD 90 degrees on its side.??
LO AND BEHOLD: My HD now runs smoothly. No problem for the past few days.
So, if your HD gives you the jitters and angst that it is about to day,
let it run on its side. I now run all my HD on its side. Apparently, this mode
of operation puts of a strain on the mechanism and possibly prolongs the
lifetime of your HD.
Any thought on this out there?
